The word Ramadan is derived from the Arabic root 'Ramida' or 'Ar-Ramad' which means 'scorching heat'. This is the month of fasting, worship and paying zakat. The Quran was revealed in Ramadan, Muslims wake up early to eat a pre-dawn meal called suhoor, and they break their fast with a meal referred to as iftar. During the holy month, it is common to host large iftars, especially for the poor and needy. Nightly prayers called Taraweeh are also held in mosques after Isha.
